They're not merely involving the parts of their brains used for processing language. They engage the same areas of their mind that they would if they were experiencing the story themselves. As people heard the parable of the prodigal son, they'd feel shocked at a child asking for his inheritance early, or empathy as the young son began to suffer.
Engaging people's imaginations allowed Jesus' teaching to really hit home. A story gives the listener a hook to hold onto and an easy method to communicate the same lesson to others. Our brains want to process information based on patterns. We interpret new information and choices through a lens of prior experiences and knowledge.
Parables allowed salt-of-the-earth folks to connect abstract spiritual ideas with patterns that were meaningful to them. When new information is presented in a familiar narrative form, our brains are better able to retain that information.
This allowed Christ's listeners to remember and communicate these same truths to others easily. Sometimes people only value concepts that are complex and difficult to understand. It makes them feel smart and important. This describes many of the Pharisees. People like this dismiss ideas that are too accessible. Jesus is asked why He teaches in parables. But if this is the case, why should the disciples of Jesus have needed an explanation of the parable at all?
Then how will you understand any of the parables? In the context of Mark, the disciples are little more secure than the enemies of Jesus who are confounded by his message. How often in real life have we seen the irony of supposed Church insiders not getting the message at all? What is going on here is that our understanding of parables is being challenged. Even though most of the seeds sown by God seem to be failing, the ones that do take root will bear abundant fruit.
Second, the apparent failure of the kingdom proclamation will be the seeds of its success. We could even say that not only is the parable of the sower a parable about the kingdom proclamation of Jesus, but it is a parable about parables. The parable of the sower shows us that we should be a little more careful about naming parables than we usually are.
This parable could have been called the parables of the seeds or the parable of the soils, and each name would subtly affect our interpretation.
